I've just returned from a perfect cottage holiday in the north of Scotland. I must confess that although I'm a native of this lovely country I've not travelled much in the Highlands. Well, I've just returned but even as I write this I'm busy planning my next trip! Superb scenery, friendly locals, excellent food and drink I was in heaven. I think I'm fairly typical of many of my coutrymen, the weather isn't great and come the long awaited summer holidays we're all jetting off to sunnier climes...

This time I decided to travel north up through Pitlochry (where I stopped to see the Salmoln ladder .... more of that later). Pitlochry is in the heart of Scotland amidst some of the most stunning scenery you're ever likely to see and full of excellent pubs and restaurants where you'll receive friendly service with a smile and chat. Anyway, on we went very soon passing by Aviemore (where I once went skiing with the school...), and on towards Inverness.

Arriving in Inverness in late afternoon we decided to check in to our B&B and prepare for our visit to the Culloden Battlefield next morning..... Culloden was the last battle fought on the UK mainland. April 16th 1746, a date that, to this day, lives on in infamy in the hearts of Highlanders. An eerie place where you can't help feeling for the people who were decimated following the defeat of the 'Bonnie Prince'.

And so we moved on, onwards and upwards over the Moray Firth and stopping at the watchpoint at Charlestown for a spot of dolphin watching..... more on my next post...
